“It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.”
— Piter De Vries, Dune (1984).
Indoctrination Guide asks whose will really sets our minds in motion and how we could make it our own.
Arthur Schopenhauer's will was a fundamental force of human existence that moved us before we could even reason why or what. While Friedreich Nietzsche introduced us to the will to power where he offers us a way out of this "natural" deadlock.
Will has become an urgent subject in the age technological mediation; our perception, desires and ultimate dreams which we materialize all arise from the will of the reality of the virtual.
Philosophers, artists, curators, designers, professionals and collectors are emerging from the reality of the virtual, which is more real than reality itself, with an uninspired universal subconscious. This is a practical guide that is aimed at the decision-makers of the future who have become aware that those around them are undead; with anticipated preferences, directed attention and choices increasingly structured before they can even become conscious of making them. If the will has always been subject to forces beyond conscious control, what happens when those forces are deliberately designed?
Indoctrination Guide approaches this question through philosophy, cinema, visual art, literature, music, and direct experience. Rather than treating these disciplines as separate forms of knowledge, the guide examines their capacity to construct, reinforce, and disrupt our understanding of reality.
